The Chinese Spring Festival Gala was held at the Missouri Theatre on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2019. It was jointly organized by four organizations: MU Chinese Students and Scholars Association, MU Confucius Institute, Columbia Friends of China and Mid-Missouri Chinese Association.
Special guests included: Anna Hui, director of the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations, who is the first Asian American to serve in the governor’s cabinet in Missouri history; Mary Stegmaier, the interim vice provost for International Programs at the University of Missouri; David Currey, director of international student and scholar services at University of Missouri; Sang Kim, director of the Asian Affairs Center and the MU Confucius Institute; LIU Lan, Chinese director of the MU Confucius Institute; and Dong Xu, director of the MU College of Engineering Information Technology Program.
As a joint organizer, the Confucius Institute prepared several performances for this gala. Performances included the classical dance “Jinghong Dance,” a guzheng solo “Fuxi shen Tianxiang,” “Tai Chi Show” and “Qi Dance.” Each presentation brought a different Chinese element to the gala. The “Tai Chi Show” and “Qi Dance” performances demonstrated cooperation through the participation of local Americans. More than 10 local residents, who are students of Professor Wenfang Yang in our weekly Tai Chi and Health Qi Gong classes, took part on our performances.
The program received unanimous praise from the audience. The whole event was a satisfying and lively way to celebrate the Chinese New Year.
